Vilas County Court Docket Searches
Start with Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, the free public tool known as WCCA. It pulls selected case data straight from the statewide circuit case-management system. Pick Vilas County to narrow your docket search. A full circuit case number works best. Without one, search by party or business name. Follow the minimum-character and wildcard rules in WCCA help.
WCCA is one door into the system, not the whole courthouse. If you lack internet access, ask the clerk about a public terminal at the courthouse. The Clerk of Circuit Court also takes questions by phone and at the counter. The county publishes a mailing address and fax. Municipal ordinance cases may sit with a local municipal court instead. Federal dockets live in PACER and CM/ECF.
- Identify whether the matter is circuit, municipal, probate, appellate, or federal.
- Open WCCA, select Vilas County, and search by case number or a sufficiently specific name.
- Open the case-number result and verify the case type, status, parties, filings, orders, and dates.
- Use the calendar view to review a public setting, then confirm a near-term date with the clerk.
- Ask the proper custodian for the actual document, a plain copy, or a certified copy.
Vilas County Docket Search Fields
Simple Search covers the fields most people want. Advanced Search adds filters for party role, classification, status, and dates. A county name search needs at least three characters of the last name plus at least three characters of the first or middle name. Business searches use at least three characters and the wildcard WCCA describes. The more precise your terms, the faster and cleaner the results.
| Field | Control | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| County | Dropdown | Select Vilas for county circuit records; Statewide searches all participating counties. |
| Case number | Text | Use the exact year, two-letter case type, and sequence when known. |
| Party name | Text | Use last, first, and middle fields with WCCA minimum-character rules. |
| Business name | Text | Search an entity, municipality, association, or agency by official name. |
| Case type and status | Filters | Narrow civil, criminal, traffic, family, probate, or other public records. |
| Dates | Date controls | Limit by filing, disposition, or offense date when the mode offers it. |
A birth date can narrow a party search. It is sensitive, though, so pair it with a name. Advanced options may include Include missing DOB and Include without middle name. Use only the facts you need. Find your own case or follow a public matter with them.
Court Dockets: What They Show
A Vilas County court docket is public case information, displayed where Wisconsin law permits. It identifies the case and lays out its procedural history. The WCCA detail view may call this material Case Details rather than docket. Expect public parties, dates, and filing and order labels. Calendar activity, case status, and disposition or sentence areas appear too, tied to the case type.
| Case number | A circuit identifier such as 2002CF000001, made from year, type code, and sequence. |
|---|---|
| Parties and attorneys | Public roles and names where display is allowed. |
| Filings and orders | Chronology labels that identify court-record events, not the full document images. |
| Hearing settings | Public dates, times, activities, location, and court official when listed. |
| Status | A public label such as pending or disposed; it is not a judgment about a person. |
| Disposition | The public outcome area when the case type and access rules allow it. |
Seeing a docket entry does not mean the filing itself downloads from there. WCCA neither displays nor sells the underlying complaints, motions, exhibits, or transcripts. For a public file copy, ask the clerk.
Vilas County eFiled Court Records
Wisconsin Circuit Court eFiling is separate from public WCCA access and requires an account. Registered parties and lawyers work through My Cases filters. View documents and View Parties cover cases tied to their access. A case-number link can still open WCCA public information. Restricted documents show black document names and will not open.
That gap is why a lawyer sees an eFiled document. A public visitor sees only its docket label. The public should not register just to get around access rules. For a public Vilas County court record, find the case in WCCA. Then ask the clerk about the actual file. eFiling support handles account and filing-system problems, not ordinary county copy requests.
Note: The eFiling fee is a filing charge. It is not a fee for viewing the free public WCCA case index.
Vilas County Courts and Their Dockets
Wisconsin's circuit court serves as the state trial court for Vilas County. Its criminal docket covers felonies and misdemeanors. The civil docket spans civil and small-claims cases. The court also handles family matters, probate, juvenile matters, commitments, forfeitures, and some reviews from lower proceedings. Municipal courts are a separate local layer for ordinance violations. Appellate and federal matters keep their own record systems.
| Court or office | Docket covers | Where to search |
|---|---|---|
| Vilas County Circuit Court | State trial matters in two local branches | WCCA, courthouse terminal, or Clerk of Circuit Court |
| Municipal courts | Municipal ordinance, parking, and many local traffic matters | The relevant municipal court or clerk; WCCA only after circuit filing or transfer |
| Wisconsin Court of Appeals District III | Appeals from the circuit level | Wisconsin appellate case search |
| Western District of Wisconsin | Federal civil and criminal cases; separate bankruptcy court | PACER and court-specific CM/ECF |
| Register in Probate | Probate administration and probate-file questions | Register in Probate, with WCCA for available indexed information |
Vilas County runs two branches. Branch 1 seats Judge Martha J. Milanowski; Branch 2 seats Judge Daniel L. Overbey. Both belong to the Ninth Judicial District, whose administrative leaders do not create another local trial court.
Vilas County Municipal Docket Gaps
A municipal ticket may never show up in the Vilas County court docket. Wisconsin municipal courts hold exclusive jurisdiction over municipal ordinance violations. Their dockets can include traffic, parking, first-offense OWI, and local ordinance matters. Those records are not a second WCCA display. When a municipality has no municipal court, its ordinance case goes to circuit court instead.
The Wisconsin municipal-court overview and its official directory are the right routing tools. Current municipal statistics list Vilas rows for the towns of Manitowish Waters and Presque Isle with zero and an asterisk. The report explains that the asterisk means not all four quarters were reported. A zero is not proof. It does not show whether any citations existed. Read the citation for the named court. Contact that local office before assuming a record vanished.
Court Dates and Settings in Vilas County
The WCCA calendar is the official online starting point for a Vilas County circuit hearing. Select Vilas County first. Then choose a date range of no more than seven days. You can also narrow by court official. You can select Traffic only. Results may show date and time, case number, caption, activity, county/location, court official, prosecuting attorney, and party attorney.
A calendar row is not a filed notice. It cannot guarantee the event occurs as first listed. A continuance, reset, cancellation, or later order can change it. Check the case details, then call the clerk at 715-479-3632 for a near-term question. Municipal dates use their own local route. The full Vilas County court schedule walkthrough explains filters, blank results, and missed-setting steps.
Older Vilas County Court Dockets
How far back does a Vilas County court docket search go? That depends on when the county came onto Wisconsin's circuit case-management system. Each county made that move at its own pace. There is no single safe start year for Vilas County records online. So an empty result proves nothing about whether an older case exists. The gap could come from how history was loaded. A misspelled name, the wrong court, a sealed record, or a statutory restriction could also explain it.
Try a known case number with the optional filters cleared. Also confirm which court handled the matter. Circuit, municipal, probate, appellate, and federal are different systems. If an older circuit file still will not appear, call the Clerk of Circuit Court. A courthouse public terminal offers another route into the case index. Vilas County publishes no terminal room, printing workflow, or special workstation hours. Phone ahead before any long drive.
Docket Access Under Wisconsin Law
Wisconsin balances two goals in docket access. The Public Records Law gives a general right to inspect and copy. Court statutes and orders shield what should stay closed. A public court docket index can sit right alongside sealed documents and restricted case types. Redacted copies can appear there too. Knowing the case number alone does not entitle anyone to everything in the file.
Key rules:
Wis. Stat. §19.35 establishes the general right to inspect and copy records subject to law.
Wis. Stat. §19.36 supplies exemptions and limits that qualify general access.
Wis. Stat. §801.19 governs protected information in court filings.
Wis. Stat. §801.21 provides the motion process for sealing a court record.
Wis. Stat. §938.396 limits access to juvenile records.
Protection is built into the WCCA system itself. Victim, citizen-witness, and juror details are omitted or restricted in covered settings. Clerks never enter Social Security numbers, financial-account numbers, passwords, or similar protected data into the public record. Use court docket access to follow court activity or your own case. Do not try to work around those controls.
Vilas County Court Docket Copies
WCCA can tell you a document exists by its date and docket label. The actual copy comes from the office holding the file. Vilas County posts no special general copy-request form. Its clerk page lists no public records email either. So reach the clerk by phone, mail, or at the counter. Give the full case number, the caption, the exact document, and the date range. Say whether you want plain or certified copies. Include the number of copies and delivery contact information. Treat that as a practical checklist, not an official county form.
| Service | Current state schedule |
|---|---|
| Plain clerk copy | $1.25 per page |
| Certified clerk copy | $5 certification plus $1.25 per page |
| One-action search without case number | $5 |
| Plain probate copy | $1 per page |
| Certified probate copy | $3 plus $1 per page |
The clerk updates that fee schedule on September 2, 2026, so ask for a current estimate before ordering a long court file. Filing fees, fines, surcharges, processor fees, and copy fees in Vilas County are all separate charges.
How the Clerk Keeps Docket Records
Beth Soltow is the publicly listed Vilas County Clerk of Circuit Court. Her office is where the county's circuit court docket actually lives day to day. Clerk staff enter official case information into CCAP, both paper and electronic filings. CCAP is the case-management system that feeds selected public data to WCCA. Need a docket entry, a public copy, certification, or older records? This is the office to contact. Branch and hearing confirmation, payment routing, and access questions go here too.

Mail your request to the Clerk of Courts at the courthouse address. Probate administration or probate files go to the Register in Probate at that same address, phone 715-479-3642. Before mailing anything large, confirm the payment method and the estimate.
Vilas County Courthouse Record Access
The courthouse anchors the Vilas County court docket in person. You will find it at 330 Court Street in Eagle River. Per the county's security page, the only public entrance is curbside on Court Street. Everyone passes screening. Prohibited items cannot be stored. Behind the west end sits the Justice Center entrance. That one serves Sheriff and jail visitors only, not routine court traffic.
The logistics matter in a county this size. Census 2020 counted 23,047 residents spread across 857.71 land square miles. A WCCA lookup can save you a needless trip by locating the case first. Copies, archives, transcripts, restricted records, and terminal logistics may still require staff help. Call 715-479-3632 before traveling for an old file or a same-day issue. Posted clerk hours never guarantee that any record can be produced on the spot.
Vilas County Docket Terms
Wisconsin's court systems favor their own vocabulary: case information, Case Details, filings, orders, court record, and court calendar. Readers often call that same running chronology a docket. The terms overlap, but none of them equals the full case file.
- CCAP
- The Wisconsin circuit court case-management system used by clerk staff.
- WCCA
- The public Wisconsin Circuit Court Access display of selected circuit case information.
- Case details
- The public page reached from a case-number result, including available events and status.
- Filing
- A document submitted in the case; its docket label does not guarantee a public image.
- Setting
- A scheduled court activity that may later be reset, continued, or cancelled.
- Certified copy
- A copy carrying the clerk's certification, with a separate certification charge.
When you ask court staff for something, use the court's own label. A precise case number plus an exact document title cuts delay and lowers the risk of ordering the wrong item.
City-by-City Court Dockets in Vilas County
Eagle River stands alone here. It is the only incorporated city in Vilas County. So it gets the only city page in this set. The 2020 Census put its population at 1,628. Wisconsin's 2025 final estimate came in at 1,685. For city records or a municipal citation, start with City Hall or the city clerk. Circuit cases, by contrast, run through WCCA and the county Clerk of Circuit Court.

Use the city channel for municipal matters and WCCA for circuit cases.
Villages and towns are not padded into the city list. Manitowish Waters and Presque Isle do appear in municipal-court sources, but neither is an incorporated city. That distinction keeps the city route honest and tied to the official numbers.
